But they swapped their own names and pretended
That was how it had been meant to go.
He called her every day after,
Until that call became her lifeline:
Two kindred souls, their laughter
Became the only luxury they thought quite fine.
But the day she sought to meet him;
The day she spoke aloud her heart,
Was the day he said they shouldn’t speak again,
For he claimed they lived too far apart.
Pieces were scattered on the floor;
There was no one who could save her —
Until she heard his voice once more
In a young man, thirty years later.
