There is shelter in the hours
The small ones in the morning
They hide me with their powers
From the watching and the warring
There is nothing to induce me
To cast off their kindly cloak
All that is awaiting
Is a wish I never woke.

You express the concept beautifully, Rachel, and you employ a lyric eloquence we only can admire. Though most assuredly, we will after drinking deeply of your creativity.
Though I consider myself to be an optimist, the night holds special promise and replenishment. It’s a time for imagining the slumber ahead, and anticipating the way its dreams will have a positive influence on the waking hours beyond.

“Only can admire” — hah! More often than not, it is my part to admire. I am but a stone wall in the midst of so many blooming vines.
Oh? So does that make you a night owl, or an insightful early bird?

Rachel, the vines are grateful for the wall which sustains them and which inspires their vigor. They explore with fascination its undulations, parries and pronouncements.
As for the routine, both, actually. A night owl by preference and an early bird by necessity – the morning commute and all. I can’t tell you the last time I got eight hours, or even if I could find them if I tried.
Part of it is that I just am hitting my stride, creatively, by late evening, and I don’t want to mess with that trajectory. Part of it is aesthetic, as I just love night’s mystery and its peaceful dignity. So much possibility.
Also, part of it is immaturity, recognizing and hoping to delay having the next conscious moment be when I must start preparing to leave for the office.
How about you? From various comments you’ve made, I’m guessing you’re a night light yourself If so, does that translate to you sleeping in mornings, or does work/school force your hand?

Ha! I can greatly empathize with your reasonings for liking the night…
To be honest, I’m out of school and don’t have a job, so I have the luxury of being able to sleep in mornings; one that I abuse to the point of imprudence.

I have a love/hate relationship with early morning hours. I hate getting up early, but they are peaceful and as you said – they hide you.

Indeed. The trick is to not get up early, but stay up late. Well, you know, if you’re willing to throw a wrench into your entire day/night cycle…

That is my natural pattern. Too bad it doesn’t work with the real world…
